Finishing Culinary Programs To Become A Successful Chef

Before anything, a few things need to be considered when searching for the best culinary school specific to your chosen career.  After all, if you were to spend time earning a certificate or degree from the wrong school, several things could happen.  For one, you might not get all the education and training required to be successful in your career and two, the school might not have a good reputation among the better restaurants, hotels, and resorts.  Therefore, making the right choice could be the difference between success and failure.

Certificates and Degrees

The first consideration when looking at different culinary art schools is making sure the programs offered match your career goals.  Although culinary programs are similar among various schools, no two schools are identical.  In fact, you will find that some cooking schools only offer certificates while others provide the opportunity to earn an Associate or Bachelor degree for a variety of career options.

You should also learn about the specific types of culinary programs in that some might only be located on campus or some online, coupled with campus classroom time.  There are even culinary schools that offer externship programs, allowing you time in an actual restaurant or hotel to gain hands-on experience with a highly trained chef.  With this, you would gain a huge advantage for honing your skills.

Culinary Curriculum

Another aspect of choosing the right culinary or cooking school has to do with curriculum.  After you know the culinary programs needed for your career path, you want to look deeper at the actual courses.  In fact, of all the decisions you would make in choosing the right school, curriculum is probably the most essential.  In addition to the more advanced studies such as cuisine creation, menu design, and food presentation, you also need to learn all the basics such as:

•    Identifying types and proper methods for handling knives
•    Cooking with wet and dry heat
•    Making stocks and sauces
•    Understanding concepts of baking
•    Cutting different cuts of poultry, meat, and fish
•    Learning various regulations for safety and health

Any culinary school being considered should provide a full spectrum of programs and curriculum, guaranteeing you would graduate with the required skills for the job.  You should also determine the types of specialized courses offered by the school, such as management, wines, pastries, etc.  If your goal were to become a head chef, choosing a complementary certificate or degree would make you far more marketable.

Teaching Methods

Schools being looked at for culinary programs should also provide you with information as to the type of teaching methods used.  Some schools are taught with demonstration only, which means you watch an instructor go through the different steps.  Although this method is informative, most people learn best by doing so finding a school that provides hands-on education and student-instructor interaction would be best.

Additionally, identify classroom size, as well as the classroom environment.  The goal is to choose a cooking school that would make it easier for you to learn so if the classes were comprised of too many people, it would be difficult for the instructor to give adequate time to each student.  Then, courses should be taught using only the most current equipment and the classroom set up for efficiency.

Culinary School Instructors

You need to learn about instructors at each of the culinary schools being considered.  With the name of the person who would teach the culinary programs, conduct a search through Google.com to learn about his/her history in the food industry, certificates, degrees, and other related information.  Remember, this person is going to have a direct impact on your success as a chef or other role working with food so you want to learn from the best.

Accreditation

Finally, any culinary school should be accredited.  This is vital in that an accredited school is overseen by a third-party to ensure operations, services, and instructions meet high standards.  When ready to send out your resume, potential employers would be more impressed if you earned a certificate or degree from an accredited school than one that is not accredited.
